Chemistry Notes
- Element: substance that cannot be broken down by chemical means; have a specific amounts of protons
- Atom: smallest possible particle of an element; makes up everything around us
- The center of an atom is called a nucleus. It is not alive, but it produces things that are alive.
- Protons have positive charge, neutrons have no charge, and electrons have negative charge
- The place where the electrons move is called the electron cloud
- An atomic number of an element tells you how many protons it has; if Helium has an atomic number of two, it has two protons
- The atomic number defines each element
- APE= Atomic Number, Protons, Electrons= ARE EQUAL
- if the atomic number is 5, there will be five protons; BUT this is not the same for electrons.
- Electrons can change when undergoing chemical reactions and they are bonding with something else
- atoms are made mostly of empty space
- mass of electrons have nothing to do with the atomic mass
- protons and neutrons weigh about the same
- Mass number - Atomic number = Neutrons *MAN
